Hip Fractures

The hip bone, also called the "pelvis," is an integral part of the body. Legs are connected to the pelvis, making it a large joint which provides people with the ability to sit, bend, stand, and move their legs. If a person breaks a hip they will have very limited mobility. The majority of people who suffer from hip fractures are the elderly whose bones become weaker as they age. Approximately 300,000 people experience broken hips each year that require hospitalization.

There are two different types of pelvic breaks, the Intertrochanteric fracture and Femoral neck fracture, each requiring different treatment procedures. In severe cases hip replacement surgery is performed by an orthopedic surgeon, which is a common procedure in the United States. Pneumonia, infection, and/or blood clots may occur following a hip fracture.
